The Degree of BDS is awarded to candidates who have undergone a period of certified study extended over four academic years followed by one-year compulsory rotatory internship.

The curriculum is divided into two broad areas:

The Preclinical Training Programme
The 1 st and 2 nd year of professional BDS program aims at proficiency in the:-

The Clinical Training Programme
The 3 rd and 4 th year of the professional BDS program consists of :-

  • Clinical training on patients in the clinics in various departments.

General Human Anatomy

Anatomy is one of the basic subjects, understanding which is necessary to perform scientific clinical dental procedures.
Department of General Anatomy imparts knowledge about structure of human body with the help of Dissections, demonstrations, histology slides.

General Human Physiology & Biochemistry

Physiology is basis of medical science.
In the department, functions of different parts of body are taught to first year BDS students, along with the Practical’s of blood and muscles using microscope and other lab instruments. Biochemistry is a branch of study, which explains the chemical reactions i.e. Digestion and metabolism within a human body. It’s knowledge and techniques helps in understanding metabolic and molecular changes occurring in human living cells and also the study of biochemical changes and alterations in human body during infection or diseases, which helps the dentist in treatment of patients.
Biochemistry is a foundation for dental as well as other doctors in understanding the biological processes.

DENTAL ANATOMY EMBRYOLOGY & DENTAL HISTOLOGY

The Department of Oral Pathology, owns impressively designed and equipped laboratories, seminar room, library, histopathology lab and equipment’s like research microscopes to facilitate research activities, teaching, discussions, and latest laboratory equipment’s to provide good quality patient care.

A strong base of normal dental anatomy, histology of the oral tissues and Oral Pathology is ensured. Practical’s involving tooth carving, tooth identification, histopathological slide identification are taught with due reasoning, highlighting the importance of basic knowledge in the clinical work, to make the basic subjects interesting to the students.

Dental Materials, Pre-Clinical Prosthodontics & Crown & Bridges

It’s a 4 year subject, which is taught from the first year to have basic understanding and knowledge of anatomy, functions and its treatment. In the first year students are taught on the cast and model work for skilful development.

General Pathology and Microbiology Including Parasitology

Pathology means scientific study of the diseases. This department deals with what is diseases, cause (etiology) of diseases, how (mechanism- pathogenesis) of diseases occurs and what are the complications of diseases using Microscope.

General and Dental Pharmacology

Pharmacology is an important part of Medical Science. It involves the study and description of drugs and their effect on whole body system. The study of pharmacology has Pivotal role pre and post- operative management of Dental procedures
The objective of the department is to educate the undergraduate (Dental) students about pharmacological knowledge of Medications in clinical dentistry.
In this era of Translational research, we at department encourage dental students for innovative and efficacy oriented research.

Dental Materials & Pre-Clinical Prosthodontics Crown & Bridges

Dental Materials is the subject attached with prosthodontics crown & bridge. Dental Material generally focuses on the materials used in Dentistry. Details including its properties, function and how to use specific material is taught both theoretical and practically in this class.

Pre-Clinical Conservative Dentistry

Conservative Subject focuses on how to save & restore the tooth. This subject mainly focuses on the students to develop their skilful hands by practicing first on phantom heads. It provides them basic knowledge and understanding of how to deal with patient.

General Medicine

Medicine is the base of BDS programme. This subject focuses on the diseases, highlighting its treatment. To understand drugs is the core of this subject.

General Surgery

In the BDS course, the degree students get into the dental, major role of surgery is there. The Dental surgeon requires basic surgical skills, to tackle emergency conditions. For any dental procedures minor/major surgery, it is necessary to have basic knowledge of how to deal with any complications that may occur. Study of General Surgery is very much essential for successful dental surgeon any themselves are called surgeons.

Oral Pathology and Microbiology

The Department of Oral Pathology, since its inception is committed to providing a conceptual education to undergraduate students. The department owns impressively designed and equipped laboratories, seminar room, library and histopathology lab and equipment’s like research microscopes to facilitate research activities and latest laboratory equipment’s to provide good quality patient care. The department provides conceptual, comprehensive and evidence based education to the undergraduate students to help them emerge as good academicians as well as independent oral pathologists. A strong base of normal dental anatomy, histology of the oral tissues and Oral Pathology is ensured. Practical’s involving histopathological slide identification are taught with due reasoning, highlighting the importance of basic knowledge in the clinical work, to make the basic subjects interesting to the students.

Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics

It’s the vast subject which focuses on the restorative and aesthetic dental procedures. Students in the 3rd year are taught basic restorative treatment and are allowed to perform the same on patients.

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral & maxillofacial surgery is a specialized branch of dentistry which deals with the extraction of diseases teeth & facial skeleton disorders. It’s a final year based subject but at KSD we provide students clinical experience from the the 3rd year to gain basic Knowledge and understanding.

Oral Medicine & Radiology

Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology is a centre of diagnosis of various dental diseases. It is also a centre for screening and diagnosing various precancerous lesions and conditions.

Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopeadics

At KSD, we get to the very basics of the subject so that our students have a thorough knowledge of how the dentofacial anatomy works. Interactive sessions like seminars, journal club, case presentations, discussion and demonstrations are routinely conducted. Along with that in their practical sessions, students are taught basic treatment modalities on the model.

Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry

Provides comprehensive training of the undergraduates as well as postgraduate students to acquire knowledge and skills in order to enable them to effectively deal with the oral health problems encountered in children. In 3rd year, students are taught Children Management Behaviour, to understand and tackle child patients.

Periodontology

In 3rd year, Students are provided with basic knowledge and understanding of the subject which includes structure supporting Gums and its surrounding. Student are taught to treat first with hand instruments to understand the technique of each instruments and equipment’s. Regular seminars and presentation are expected from students for its overall development.

Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridges

It’s the branch of dentistry which deals with replacement of missing teeth and structures related to the oral cavity and face. Under the guidance of faculty, students are allowed to treat patient’s starting with basic treatment modalities. In 3rd year, the base of subject is strengthen to effectively treat patient in the future.

Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge

Department of Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge- Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry which deals with replacement of missing teeth and structures related to the oral cavity and face. It also specialises in cosmetic dentistry. The treatment procedures include complete and partial dentures, fixed bridges, implant retained dentures and bridges, veneers. It also specialises in replacement of facial structures like eye, nose, ear, etc. due to congenital or acquired conditions. It treats patients with jaw joint issues.

Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics

Department of conservative dentistry and endodontics focuses on teaching and training undergraduate (BDS) and postgraduate students(MDS) for more than 15 years. Our department focuses on various tooth restorations, smile designing, dental veneers and crowns, surgical & nonsurgical root canal therapy, vital pulp therapy, and regenerative endodontic procedures. Our department uses the latest dental technologies and devices such as Microscope, Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), dental LASER, dental bleaching unit for the training of our undergraduate and postgraduate dental students.

Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopeadics

Department of Orthodontics deals with correction of mal-aligned teeth, improving the smile and enhancing the facial aesthetics along with achieving functional stability. Latest techniques like self-ligating braces, clear aligners are taught along with conventional as well as surgical orthodontics.

Orthodontics is a subject that cannot be taught just by thee book because it requires knowledge of the entire anatomy, physiology and biochemistry to understand the movement of tooth! We at KSD, get to the very basics of the subject so that our students have a thorough knowledge of how the dentofacial anatomy works. Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry

The Pediatric and Preventive dentistry department was established in 2006 with the aim of comprehensive training of the undergraduates and was extended for postgraduate students in 2012 to acquire knowledge and skills in order to enable them to effectively deal with the oral health problems encountered in children. The department has child friendly reception area, play area, separate undergraduate and air conditioned postgraduate and isolation sections. It is well equipped with all advanced materials and latest devices like portable rvg, laser, cautery, audio visual aids and also has in-house facility of sedation and general anaesthesia which is unique of its kind.

The department is supervised by qualified and efficient full time faculties who trains the students to deliver full spectrum of high quality treatment needs, fosters community based learning and also encourages academic research activities.

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Karnavati School of Dentistry is known to provide best training for its student at both UG and PG levels in major/minor surgical procedures which help them gain necessary knowledge and skills to efficiently treat good number of patients once they enter into private practice. This department provides diagnosis and treatment of maxillofacial pathologies, trauma, esthetic facial surgery, jaw deformities corrections, apart from the tooth extractions of both simple as well as complex varieties. This branch is considered as a bridge between medical and dental branches, hence this department has best medical/surgical facilities, operation theatre, intensive care unit, separate male and female wards.

Periodontology

Periodontology or periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that studies supporting structures of teeth, as well as diseases and conditions that affect them. A periodontist is a specialist dentist who treats patients for periodontal-related diseases and conditions. They are involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. Periodontists provide treatments for patients with severe gingival diseases and/or complex medical histories. Periodontists offer a wide range of treatments including root scaling and planning, periodontal surgery, implant surgery and other complex periodontal procedures.

Public Health Dentistry

The department of Public Health Dentistry imparts the knowledge of the principles of health promotion and disease prevention among the students. It also helps to achieve knowledge of community based preventive measures and knowledge of social, cultural and environmental factors which contribute to oral health. The department also imparts education regarding the aetiology and prevention of oral diseases. Further the students are also trained to prepare charts, models, posters and audio-visuals on oral health themes to educate the mass about the importance of oral health

Oral Medicine and Radiology

Department of oral medicine and radiology is performing various advance procedures like biopsy and other non-invasive procedures for investigation and treatment of various lesions. Also provides Tens therapy, splints and artherocentesis for Temporomandibular and musculoskeletal diseases. Radiology department is equipped with most advance CBCT technology for better diagnostics and evaluation.

FAQS for BDS

YES, NEET is a National Entrance Exam which is mandatory to enrol for BDS admission in any of the colleges of India.
There is a minimum criterion to qualify for NEET and it’s cut off differs every year depending on the merit list.
BDS course is of total 5 years. 4 Academic years + 1 Internship year. Internship is mandatory to receive degree for BDS.
Students are allowed to do internship at other dental institute by following all the rules & regulations of DCI.
After graduation, students can further opt for Master’s Degree in Dentistry, Fellowship Courses, Masters in Hospital Administration, Masters in public health dentistry and can also pursue for further courses in foreign countries.
To practice dentistry in foreign countries, along with entrance exam students need to qualify for licence exam, which differs from country to country on the basis of its rules & regulation.
KSD provides one of the finest infrastructure in the country. It includes fully functional pre-clinic as well as clinic area, dental lab with latest technology, ceramic & chrome lab, processing room, dissection room, audio-visual rooms, a library, and an auditorium. All the classrooms are equipped with unique modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment.
Classes are scheduled from 9 am to 3 pm. It’s an official holiday on 1st& 3rd weekend. Labs are kept open after college hours as per the request of students, safety precautions like masks, aprons, and gloves are all mandatory for the student’s safety.
At KSD, 300+ patient footfall every day for basic treatment. Students of 2nd year visit clinic for the purpose of observation & assisting basic treatments. Thereafter from the 3rd year students are allowed to treat the patients.
Continuous evaluation/ Credit point system: It comprises making regular assignments & MCQ’s from 1st year. There are points for attendance too.
  • Assessment exam 1 & 2: Students are evaluated through written exams and practical exam along with viva during the mid-semester.
  • University exam: The final exam comprises of written paper for theory courses and an external examiner for practical courses.
