Good communication is important in any profession, but it is especially critical if you want to become a dentist. As a dentist, you will be dealing with patients from all walks of life, fellow dentists and staff members. While you are pursuing a BDS or MDS course, it’s a good time to hone your communication skills. As one of the leading dental colleges in Gandhinagar, we share with you some tips to develop their communication skills
1. Listen attentively:
Listening is an important skill that helps you to communicate better. . Only when you listen to information properly will you be able to interpret it better. Without listening actively, you will only react but not respond. Here are a few things that you can do to improve your listening skills:
- Pay attention to words and the tone the other person uses.
- Avoid the temptation to interrupt or offer solutions before the other person has finished speaking.
- Make an effort to really understand what the other person is trying to say by paraphrasing or summarising their concerns.
2. Participate in group presentations and assignments:
Working in small groups allows you to express your opinions. You’ll also have the opportunity to take turns leading and following, as well as working together towards a common goal. Working in a team helps you to learn how to communicate effectively with others.
3. Work on body language:
Good posture is important not only for your health but also for the way you are perceived by others. When you sit or stand up straight, you project confidence and authority. On the other hand, slouching makes you look bored and disinterested. Likewise, avoid fidgeting or tapping your foot – these can be seen as signs of nerves or impatience. Instead, try to use natural hand gestures to emphasise your points. And if you’re giving a presentation, move around the room when space allows. This will help listeners feel more included in the conversation. Finally, remember to make eye contact with the person you are speaking to.
4. Put away distractions:
When it comes to communication, being fully present is essential. If you’re constantly checking your phone or tablet, it sends the message that you’re not really interested in the conversation. Additionally, it can be difficult to respond thoughtfully if you’re not fully paying attention.
5. Be clear and concise:
In any form of communication, clarity is essential. Take the time to define your goals before you start communication. Outline carefully what you want to convey and avoid jargon and words that are redundant.
6 Watch your tone:
The way you say something is just as important as what you say. The tone of your voice conveys your feelings and attitude, and can significantly affect the way your message is received. When speaking, be aware of the overall tone of your voice, as well as the specific inflections you use on certain words. If you sound bored or uninterested, your listener is likely to tune out. On the other hand, if you sound enthusiastic and engaged, you are more likely to capture their attention.
