What are the career options after completing Bachelor of Dental Surgery?

Bachelor of Dental Surgery is a five-year course and it is equivalent to MBBS. After completing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery, you can start your practice as a dental surgeon. The duration of the course is 5 years including one year of internship. If you are planning to pursue a Bachelor of Dental Surgery, here are some career options to choose from: 

1. Go for MDS after BDS:

After completion of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree, you can pursue a Master of Dental Surgery (MDS). One of the benefits of pursuing MDS is that you can get additional clinical knowledge. MDS is the highest level of education in the dentistry field. Some of the specialisation options in MDS include:

  • Orthodontics
  • Prosthodontics
  • Conservative dentistry
  • Operative dentistry

2. Clinical practice:

Once you have completed your Bachelor of Dental Surgery , you can start your own clinic. You may require substantial investment if you want to start your own clinic. Some of the factors that you have to consider while setting up your clinic are:

  • Obtain funding for the clinic
  • Finding the right location
  • Meeting medical regulatory concerns
  • Hiring the right people (administrative, non-medical and medical staff) for your clinic 

3. Work overseas as a dentist:

After completing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery,  you can go abroad and work as a dentist.  Some countries may require you to have an MDS degree.  Check the eligibility criteria you want to work in. For instance, in the United States, you have to clear the National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) and earn a doctorate of dental surgery through a dental college to practise as a dentist.

4. Government jobs as a dentist:

You can apply for government jobs after completing the Bachelor of Dental Surgery. There are numerous job openings for you as a dentist in rural areas and in government hospitals. You can also apply for the non-clinical roles through many entrance exams such as Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and State Public Service Commission (SPSC). Also, there are many areas of employment for you, such as:

  • Contractual dental officer in the air force or navy
  • Army dental corps
  • Dental officers in the railways
  • State government dental surgeon jobs

5. Academics:

After completing the Bachelor of Dental Surgery, you can also adopt the teaching profession as a lecturer in any private or government dental institute. You can also teach in state government colleges as a teaching faculty. You can also choose to make a career in research.
